Tony Rothwell, Love, Intrigue and Chicanery

Love, Intrigue and Chicanery was inspired by the often risqué always creative satires of James Gillray (1756 – 1815), the father of the political caricature back in the Georgian era, which perhaps we should now refer to as the Bridgerton age! No-one, not royalty nor the famous or infamous, escaped his acerbic imagination and the prints were eagerly snapped up at his London publisher’s shop. The book takes nine of these caricatures and invents the story behind them where none previously existed. You will meet a vast array of humankind from scoundrels to lords and ladies, and learn a little of the history of the times into the bargain.

Tony Rothwell is a Brit who was educated in England and then, following several years in marketing, emigrated to America where he worked in the hotel industry in Washington DC. He now lives with his wife, Camilla, in Pinehurst, NC. He has had a lifelong interest in the graphic arts and history, collecting and studying Gillray’s prints from an early age.

James Gillray was a British caricaturist and printmaker active from 1779 to 1811. He became famous in his own lifetime for his unmerciful satires on politicians, high society and the Royal family during the scandal-rich Regency period, earning him the contemporary description of 'a caterpillar on the green leaf of reputation'.
